Let's begin with a shifting preparation exercise. Wait before we start! It is especially important while shifting Free thumb movement is a necessary part of free movement between positions. When playing the violin, the left thumb puts pressure on the side of the violin neck. If the pressure is too high, then the thumb movement is not free because the hand and whole arm are stiff Therefore, the restrictive pressure should always be minimal. If you try to use only the two upper joints of the thumb, without incorporating the Saddle Joint, this will lead to stiffness felt throughout the entire Hand. The Thumb and first finger should maintain consistent spacing in order to avoid squeezing against each other. Shifting motions 1. short shifts Shifting is the combined movement of the whole hand and arm, including the fingers and thumb. Let's practice short shifts with our whole hand and arm.
