GD:I got a bit older. MC:Yes, you got 2 years older. And… I am not sure what has been changed about me but, I feel like the social atmosphere like this has changed a lot rather than myself. You said that the social atmosphere has been changed a lot which makes this kind of artwork possible, but it is good that you mentioned this. This place is very unique and almost feels like we are at an arboretum, or a studio for an artwork. I heard all this came from your idea. Is there any specific reason that you chose this Olympic park as a place to reveal PARA-NOISE? GD: I would not say I chose this place, as I was quite surprised either. This is one of my favorite places which means a lot to me, since I was born in 1988. Of course, I was too young to know the famous boy who rolled a hoop at the opening ceremony of the 1988 Seoul Olympic but I think this is a very symbolic place which reminds of peace, which also relates to the name of my brand ‘Peaceminusone’ as well as the meaning of AIR FORCE 1. I was honored to hear that we can reveal our project here. The reason we decorated this place like this, is that as you can see, I was trying to make you understand the theme of this campaign through dividing it into different parts Also daisy means peace, so I tried to create a natural atmosphere using these flowers MC: I have been working with Nike almost over 10 years, and I thought that Nike’s events are always full of energy and dynamic. But this event you present with PARA-NOISE feels very peaceful and calm. GD: Like Utopia MC: Yes, like Utopia. I think you put a lot of significance on the word ‘Utopia’. I also heard that the number ‘8’ means a lot as you can see there is a one petal missing in the 8 o’clock position. GD: Yes it was right on there MC: This place shows a lot of concept of this project including the number 8. I am also curious about the fact that you came back as an artist with a paint work, not as a musician after the long break. What was the biggest reason you decided to collaborate with Nike? GD: I was such a big fan of Nike since I was young like everyone else Nike has always been in my wish list. This project with Nike means so much to me as I have always been curious about what they are doing with almost heroic athletes of our time. Nike was very open to my opinion so it was very easy to work with them. I think they suffered a lot because of me since I was quite demanding being enthusiastic about this project I had a lot of fun with this project as AIR FORCE 1 is such an iconic piece for those who love sneakers. Ever since I was young, I have dreamt about launching my shoes from Nike and hoped it would be AIR FORCE 1. So I still feel like I am dreaming. I am very happy to have so many people love this project, and gracious that we get to do this in such an interesting location like this. MC: Yes, we cannot forget about iconic brand like Nike if you are someone who loves sports, hip-hop, and fashion. I think it is natural that you become to love AIR FORCE 1. I feel proud of you making your dream come true with your hard work over many obstacles. Let me ask you a question. How would you describe AIR FORCE 1 in 2 words? GD: That’s a very difficult question. MC: Yes that’s right GD: 2 words… MC: You can choose 3 words if you want. GD: I will go with the word ‘one’. ‘One’ as in AIR FORCE 1, and I feel like the word has very diverse, complex and somewhat sentimental value to it When many people are gathered into ‘one’, and I feel like all my friends, family, and fans are in one community. That is why I thought of the word ‘one’. MC: I think that has something in common with the word like ‘peace’, ‘Utopia’ you have highlighted so far. GD: Yes. I think the word ‘one’ has many multiple meanings and broad concept. I hope I can be like that. MC: I think we can see your philosophy through this conversation. Then, can I ask what kind of meaning PARA-NOISE has? What did you want to drive and what do you want the fans to reflect from it? GD: This can also be very complicated, but in conclusion, this is also connected with the word ‘one’ I said before. The daisy flower, and my brand Peaceminusone, my name GD, they all feel like one. That represents me, even though they all have different names like G-dragon, Kwon Ji-Yong, Peaceminusone. They are all one. The word ‘PARA-NOISE’ also has a link to many different concepts. ‘PARA’ means to transcend something, and ‘NOISE’ means unwanted sound judged to be unpleasant, loud or disruptive to hearing. I personally think that ‘NOISES’ which represent different periods gather together and create another sound, and act as culture reflecting the times. Nowadays people can express their thoughts through smartphones, and even people across the world can see me talking through live streaming right now. I came up with the word ‘PARA-NOISE’ to define this certain phenomenon where noises that transcend space and time create new noises again and again. I think it goes well with what Nike’s AIR FORCE ONE has to represent. MC: I feel like you are very nature-friendly person when I hear you talk. Even now there are a lot of noises in the background, but we cannot escape from it think the fact that you project certain meaning to it shows your philosophy. GD: I wouldn’t call it ‘philosophy’; it may be a bit premature… Literally I just wanted to express what comes to my mind in a natural way, and that did go in the direction I intended. At the end, sound remained a big part of my life like music. These sounds have made me what I am today, and it will continue to shape my future. I hope everyone treasure these sounds whether it is past memories or talks you cannot forget. MC: It is very impressive you talk about sounds, not noises. Let me talk about something funny. I also received a pair as I am hosting the show, GD: It was very difficult to get one.. MC: But then it started to peel off, so I asked why and Nike said it contains our philosophy and has symbolic meaning. I heard that the upper was made in unique material and has special meaning to it. GD: Fortunately I wore this today, MC: What kind of meaning does this contain? GD: Well rather than a meaning… When I design these shoes, I did the drawing like a doodle than like a painting. I have this habit of writing a memo when I come up with something in my mind. When these notes and ideas are mixed up together, they might seem like they are covered with each other. But like people change as time goes by, I tried to keep that message in this pair of shoes. It may sound like the opposite of what I am going to say, but my favorite AIR FORCE 1 is all-white color. When people put on a brand new pair of shoes, they don’t want to get stepped on, right? MC: Yes that’s right. GD: I wanted to twist that idea The dirtier it gets…not dirtier, but I wanted to make the shoes naturally change as you spend more time with it. MC: Yes like it changes along with your memories GD: So when you look at the shoes, you can see how it has been changed, which can remind your journey together with it. MC: It is not like the shoes just get old as the time goes by. It makes you discover your new aspect. MC: There are little details on these shoes. You tied the strings backwards. What does it mean? GD: I think I have tendency to do things people tell me not to do, since I was born. We call person like me ‘tree frogs’, but I try to go against people’s expectation. That becomes my motivation as well. I have always sought for my own uniqueness, and something different than others, and it helped me a lot in life. I think your own personality is really important. MC: So you used thicker shoe laces, and tied them backwards from top to bottom. GD: You did it wrong. MC: Yes I did it wrong. GD: I will tie them for you later. MC: Mine doesn’t look cool, right? We should do it like him. You also used thick leathers and stuff, but the talk of the town is that there are 3 different colors of Nike Swoosh for this pair. GD: To talk briefly about when I was in the army, MC: You can talk about the military, it is legal. GD: No one was calling me when I was there. Even when I called them, it was hard to keep a conversation since I was serving in the military. But after I released this, I am getting so many calls. The pair you are wearing right now, is sold out as this was an exclusive edition only available in Korea. Since I was born in 1988, I made 88 pairs just for my friends and family, but it was really difficult to make a list for that 88 pairs The one with white Swoosh was originally for the global launch, but I only have one. Because, I originally draw on white sneakers and covered it with black paint at the end. The point was to make the shoes change constantly as you wear them. So it doesn’t matter what kind of shoes you have, you can draw on it as you like, the purpose was to let people make their own shoes. But as I choose the colors…I have never experienced something like this ever since I debuted, but my parents called me and said they did not receive the one with yellow Swoosh. So I told them to wear mine, MC: So your parents were not included in the 88 people? GD: Because we have different styles, I didn’t know they would want it. I don’t know if it is something psychological, but so many people called me for that. Actually I was perplexed a bit. MC: So there is yellow, white, and red Swooshes. What is your favorite? Would it be white? GD: I think I will keep paint new colors depending on how I feel on that day. MC: That would mean white must be your favorite. GD: That’s right. MC: Fortunately white color is launched globally and getting very popular. You participated in every process of the production. GD’s artwork and philosophy is in this PARA-NOISE. What is your favorite part among many different details of this product? It can be the upper, thick shoe laces, patterns, or the fact that it peels off, etc. I personally think these details are really innovative. GD: It is hard to pick just one. All of the details make one shoes, so I love them all. MC: It is obvious that the word ‘one means a lot to you. Let me ask another question. How do you want people to wear this AIR FORCE 1 – PARA-NOISE? GD: I want people to just wear them as it is. I don’t want people to care too much about the shoes. Of course, it is very important that you keep your white sneakers super clean and white when you do hip-hop. No matter how you are dressed, you have to keep your sneakers clean without any stain But at some point, everything including shoes became just one of vehicles which make me to express what I think or how I feel. Through this way, every pair of shoes can be different and unique depending on each one’s personality. That was how I wanted people to wear them. Today, I didn’t mean it but all the shoes are displayed like no one can touch them. But what I really want is – literally it is a sneaker – you wear them when you work out, walk, go to school or go to work. Just wear them as you like and they will become a pair suits you the best. MC: That’s right, you need to wear them with fun. GD: That’s right. MC: That kind of philosophy is behind it. I heard many people helped you for this collaboration, could you share some names? And what kind of energy did you receive from the project? Now, is one of the recent moments of my life so it would be hard to describe specifically from where I have got a certain energy or inspiration but that could be the love and attention, or the criticism I have received so far Those sounds have made who I am as just like in the term PARA-NOISE. So it would be hard to just pick one. MC: So it would be better to say that everyone inspired and helped you on this project. GD: Yes that’s true From a small conversation with my friends, trends, movies, books, to even the people who I don’t know in real life, all these helped me a lot getting new insights. MC: The cultural impacts you create is Pan-Asian. I would say you are a cultural icon. I wonder how you picture a culture and what message you want to send out. I don’t think I can change the culture, but if I can wish for one thing… because I have dreamed of becoming a singer looking up to the musicians since I was young, because I have dreamed of becoming a singer looking up to the musicians since I was young I hope I can be the same for the next, young generations. Maybe a turning point on their lives… Same thing happened to me and everything got different. When I grow older, and if there is anyone saying that they liked me when they were young and got good influences from me which helped them a lot, I would be very proud of myself. I would say that is my next dream Because I have grown my dreams getting inspired by other people, it would be great if I can be a dream to other people. MC: Today is the first step of that dream. Maybe someone will reach out to you and say “thank you for letting us have that court” in the future. You donated this baseball court, right? GD: Yes, I was just there too, but this is such an amazing and meaningful thing even for me I am not a professional athlete but you can work out or just listen to music on this court. I hope this can be a place you can have fun. These energies get together and create another culture, or sounds. I hope this place can be of little help make that great future. MC: Have you tried throwing a shot on that court? GD: Earlier I had a shooting so I just pretended to throw a shot. I really want to but there are too many eyes on me…so I couldn’t do it. I was embarrassed. MC: Maybe you can go there around 4:18 am, since you need number ‘8’ in there, GD: Actually I went there yesterday and threw some shoots, oh not yesterday but today… Before this morning, I went there by myself and threw some shoots. I was not able to make it at one shot, but I made a shot. MC: Maybe one day there will be a beautiful story like a boy saying that he was once in the court and someone offered to do a game one on one. The stranger gave the boy some good advice about life and it turned out to be GD! GD: I think I would lose the game. MC: Today we are talking about many different topics from GD’s philosophy to inspiration, but let us go back to your artistic aspect and ask you some final questions. You are one of the greatest musicians and we know that you have a deep knowledge of art. What is your source of inspiration? You mentioned that many things inspire you and the most import keyword would be ‘one’, but can you share your source of inspiration which you can recommend to others? GD: It is not because I named this project as PARA-NOISE, but ‘sounds’, and ‘noises’ are my sources of inspiration. I try listen what other people are saying, and try to reinterpret those noises in my own way. I learned so much from that process. . I got scolded a lot as a child, and tried to fix my wrong behaviors. All these came to me as sounds and noises which meant so much to me as I am a musician. MC: You are also wearing a t-shirt saying ‘just do it’ in Korean, which you officially started to use. What is the strongest message you want to share with the fans through this project? GD: I don’t know how I can explain this. The slogan of ‘Just do it’ was created in 1988 which I was born in. I think this slogan has influenced me a lot as I wear a lot of Nike’s products. The brand Nike feels perfect to me as it is. But the core message they want to communicate is that, “just do it”. There is no meaning, and they say just do it, so I did it. I believe many people are feeling this message. Even if you did not know about this phrase, I think it would be fun to explain the phrase of ‘Just do it’ to a lot of people. Just do it. Whatever that would be, I think you can learn a lot from just trying something. “Just do it” may sounds small but it means the world to me. So I really did it. MC: You have walked different paths which no one has tried. I think the reason you have become an icon I because you “Just did it”. GD: I was forced to do it. MC: This is the final question. As an artist, a musician, and as a human being Kwon Ji-yong, what can we look forward from you? What’s coming up next? I really don’t know. I will just do it. I feel fortunate that I can get such a good opportunity like this and happy to share this with you guys. I really don’t know what will come next. I have never done anything thinking about what should come next. I just tried to be true to every moment and the things coming to my mind and that’s the reason I am here today. That is what I will keep doing in the future. MC: That’s life. GD: It is. We have talked about GD’s philosophy on his artwork, source of inspiration and his life. He will return backstage to prepare his performance starting from 7pm. Let us say goodbye. Please give him a round of applause.
