"Go forth and discover the Earth" (29:20) "All my life I've been afraid of love," "and of talks about love," "and the injustices of love" "to its companions." Umm Kulthum didn't know how she fell in love, and how from one whisper, she found herself in love. This beautiful song was written by Morsi Jamil Aziz and composed by Baligh Hamdi. Until this day, people don't know how they fall in love and why they do. Still, the age–old question taunts man, what is love? Nizar Qabbani defines love by saying, "Love is not an oriental story," "where the protagonists marry" "at the end." "But it is sailing without a ship" "and feeling that reaching" "our destination is impossible." "It is a tremor on fingertips." "A question on sealed lips." "It is revolting over triviality." "With our despair being" "our killer; doubt." The feelings of loss, sadness, despair and doubt on one hand and happiness, attention, trust and other emotions on the other hand. Is it possible to consider them from their romantic, abstract side in order to understand the truth behind love? Man uses science to explain everything today. That is why he studied love from a scientific point of view, and he discovered that one of the biggest mysteries of human behavior since the dawn of time, which is love, is caused by a group of chemical changes that occur inside the human body. The human body secretes a group of chemical substances that control our emotional state and maintain its stability. The increase or decrease of these substances in certain amounts leads to different emotions like anger, joy, stress and love. If we imagine controlling body secretions to be similar to controlling an airplane's control panel, and we want to adjust this control panel to mimic the state of being in love. What would we do? First, we would increase the dial on the hormone dopamine, which will automatically increase happiness and motivation and lower sadness levels in our system. Next, we would increase the level of another hormone, oxytocin, which generates attachment to the beloved, blind trust in them and decreases fear towards them. Finally, we would increase the level of vasopressin, which increases desire and physical attraction and lowers the feeling of concern. We can now say that the plane of love is ready for take–off. But every flight has turbulence, correct? So does love. The strange thing is that when we are in love, the levels of the hormone serotonin decrease. In reality, serotonin is not a hormone it's a neurotransmitter. However, we'll call it a hormone in order not to complicate things. It is one of the components of what we call the happiness hormone. When it decreases, it creates in man a state similar to obsessive–compulsive disorder, especially during the early stages of love. That is why people in love always doubt their beloved and are in a state similar to paranoia. Do you know what happens when you fall in love? The effect of love on regions of the brain responsible for happiness is what makes you fly with joy when you hear your beloved's name. Even though it is just a name. It is also what makes you feel everything is alright and the world is a happy place. But in fact, it is your brain that is laughing due to all the hormonal changes happening in the body. If we were asked to draw the symbol of love, What would we draw? The obvious answer is, this heart. Psychologists today draw it in the shape of a triangle. The first side is passion, the second is intimacy, and the third is commitment. Passion symbolizes the emotional and psychological excitability of someone in love. Intimacy is being close to the one we love, caring for them and supporting them. As for commitment, it is the decision one makes to commit to loving the other and to preserve this love, or this triangle to be precise. Each of these 3 elements is the result of the body secreting certain amounts of various chemical substances. The variable elements of the triangle of love are passion and commitment and the variation of their levels is what differentiates one type of love from another. For example, in a new love relationship between a man and a woman, the levels of passion rise, as for love relations in families commitment rises to high levels. However, intimacy is the common denominator for all types of love. Can love be taught in the form of lessons? There are many books and stories about lovers and romantic novels, but there is no course or specialization in love. That is why we learn how to love with time. A small child, for example, doesn't know how to fulfill their basic needs. These are things like eating, going to the bathroom, and providing for themselves amongst other things. So when these needs are fulfilled by both their parents or one of them, or an adult that shows them compassion, tenderness and love, the ability of loving starts to sneak inside them. Neurologists proved that the love a person receives in their childhood stimulates the creation of neural pathways in the brain giving the brain the ability to respond to emotions and affection when they grow up. When this happens a person learns to understand love and appreciate emotions, making them capable of building long-term, stable relationships in their lives. Therefore, if you look into the childhood of most violent people and extremists, you'll find that it lacks love, tenderness and affection. Early attachment to one's mother provides the foundations through which a person can face life's challenges, how amazing. This is because this attachment causes the brain to preserve the mother's image and gives it the ability to retrieve it as an element of comfort and support when we go through difficult times. That is why when we get scared of something, no matter how old we get, we call out to our mothers. No matter how old we get, our mothers will always be a safest haven to us. Wisdom says, "A man stays young until" "his mother dies, he then suddenly ages." Psychologists and biologists were able to reach logical answers concerning the mechanism that handles feelings when we are in love. However, they couldn't find a definitive answer to a very important question. Why do we feel the spark of love towards a certain person among all others? A definitive answer is still non–existent to this day. Funny enough, there is a group of hypotheses scientists have presented that can form a logical explanation to this first attraction. One of them is a chemical substance with a very strange effect called "pheromones". Pheromones are molecules produced in the bodies of animals and insects, but they are secreted outside of the body to affect the behavior of surrounding beings. Its main purpose is to attract partners in mating seasons. The idea of pheromones in animals is very old. It first appeared in ancient Greece where they believed that female dogs send out certain scents to attract males. This idea was proven in 1959, by a German team who researched the secret of pheromones for 20 years, until they discovered its existence in silkworms. This happened after they proved definitively that one of the molecules produced by this worm attracted a male worm. After this discovery, scientists moved on to a more important question. Do humans secrete pheromones? And what of love that happens between two who have never met? Like the love between May Ziadeh and Gibran Khalil Gibran. She was in Egypt and he was in America, and they never got to meet each other. what was strange was that the love letters they exchanged showed that they were in a deep state of love. However, this was a different kind of love. It was the love for words, literature and ideas. Today, some companies claim that their perfumes contain pheromones. They tell that by using this perfume you'll definitely attract the opposite gender, but is this true? Scientists believe that humans have pheromones, since man belongs to the species of mammals, a species that produces scents and pheromones. However until this day, this hasn't been proven in a systematic and scientific manner. Are there any chemical substances we can take, like pills or syrups, or anything to fall in love? This spray contains a stimulator of the hormone, oxytocin, or the love hormone as it's called. This spray is called "Oxylove". You spray a bit in your nose and fall in love, as described. The manufacturing company of this spray says that it also reduces anxiety and stress. But honestly, a few people from the team tried it and they didn't feel any love, maybe because their hearts are made of stone. The magical oxytocin, which plays a big role in bringing love into your life when secreted in large quantities in your body, helps you establish long distance relationships. This is where high levels of commitment are involved, which we mentioned previously in the love triangle. Just as there are medications that can enhance feeling love, there are also anti–love drugs. Not literally, but as a part of these drugs' side effects. Medicines like depression drugs that increase the level of serotonin in the body, leading to a decrease in the feelings of love and desire. That is why it is always advised to stay away from these drugs if that be possible. Modern medications have the ability to control the level of chemical substances inside the body and this makes us think that this is the best solution to control our emotions according to circumstances. However, in reality, scientists don't encourage resorting to these synthetic substitutions. Why? Because hormones have a special mix in the body, intertwined and complex and any disruption of their natural levels causes reverse and unwanted side effects on our physical and mental health. We can say that love is still a mystery but man was able to decipher some of its secrets. The question is, would we get to a day where each of us has a control panel with which we can control our hormones and thus, love? Perhaps. But to be honest, the beauty of love lies in its element of surprise, it hits us when we're least expecting it and when we're least prepared for it. It is not important to understand love, the important thing is to appreciate its existence in our lives, because it is one of the fundamentals of happiness. Nizar Qabbani says; "Love on Earth is some of our imagination" "if we didn't find it on Earth," "we would have invented it."
