Today I will show you how to grow Gardenia in pot. What are the micro nutrients it needs, all will be discussed today. It is a hybrid variety Gardenia plant. I am using a 12 inches earthen pot which has a drainage system in the bottom for extra water releasing. To cover the drainage system I need a corrugated broken piece of earthen pot. Covering the drainage system with this. Adding some stone chips to cover the broken piece of earthen pot. You can use gravels also. Now I am adding rough sand or construction sand to cover stone chips. It is mandatory for rainy seasons. No water will log inside the pot. Drainage system is ready. Lets talk about it's potting soil. You can grow it in any kind of soil. But I am using here loamy soil. Do not use clay soil now as because of rainy season is on the way. Do not use coco peat in rainy season. It is good for summer. Gardenia plant likes acidic soil. To make soil acidic apply organic compost time to time. So here I will use one part loamy soil. Loamy soil means same amount of clay and sand mixture. One part organic compost. Here I am using my homemade kitchen waste and leaf compost mixture. You can use decomposed cowdung or vermicompost. So one part organic compost. Here I will mix some extra things into potting soil as because monsoon/rainy season is coming. Here I will use one table/tea spoon "Hindol". Hindol is a chemical. Hindol prevents earthworms, ants,............., cockroaches and other insects to grow into soil. Hindol is a insecticide of chloropyrifos group. You can find it from chemical insecticide shops or from online shopping. If not found then use Thimet, easily available in any insecticide shops. I bought it at 10 rupees from where I buy plants. One table spoon I will add. Soil is already ready. Now I am adding two things into soil. Must use Hiindol or Thimate specially in rainy season. These are micro nutrients in powder form. I will add it one spoon. If you have not this then don't worry. By mistake I skipped something that I added one handful of neem cake powder into soil. So finally one part loamy soil, one part organic compost, one handful of neem cake powder, one tea or table spoon of micro nutrients, one tea or table spoon of Hindol powder or Thimet. Now it's time to add soil into pot. Press the soil gently when adding it. So that no air gap will occur in the soil. It is mandatory for all potted plants. If so then fungal infection will occur in the soil, harmful fungi. Removing the plant carefully from the poly bag so that no root damage will occur. Don't remove the old soil. Gardenia is a sensitive plant. If there is any damage then it will drop flower buds, plant will become weak. Now water it until excess water will release from the drainage system. Leave some space,a layer for watering and for adding fertilizers in future. Now watering it. It will need more water, will be added later. The most common problem of Gardenia is flower bud drop specially for new gardeners. It is common to all of us, it was happened for me also. Now lets talk about why it drops buds. It is discussed earlier that this plant likes acidic soil. We need to keep potting soil acidic. To make soil acidic apply organic compost time to time. If soil becomes alkaline then it will drop flower buds. Another reason is for rapidly change it's location and for changing pots rapidly. As because it is a sensitive plant. It may be for insect and fungal attack. Another reason is if potting soil is too much soggy or dry then it will drop buds. Keep the soil always moist. I have a video on this topic in my channel. Apply organic compost once in a 15 days. If you have micro nutrients in granule or liquid form then it is best for it. Apply it once in a month. So that white or yellow leaves problem will not occur. Vein remain green but the other parts of the leaf white or yellow causes iron deficiency. Add one table spoon of neem cake powder once in a month into soil. It is best for plants. Add one table or tea spoon of Hindol powder once in a month. Another common problem in rainy season is fungal attack in soil and on leaves also. Apply contact fungicide once in a 15 days lke SAAF and others. Add 2 gram of fungicide powder with one liter and spray after mixing. It likes full sunlight. Don't keep it under scorching sunlight is summer. Otherwise leaves will burn. Keep it under bright sunlight. Keep it under full sunlight where sunlight comes directly, during other seasons except summer. But don't keep it under direct sunlight in summer otherwise leaves will burn. Thank you.
