Fibonacci Melody Greg Sheehan at TEDxSydney

I've been working with combining numbers with my music for a long time and recently I've been introduced to the Fibonacci sequence of numbers and it represents basically how about 90% of things that we know to exist grow and the sequence is naught 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 and it goes on literally to infinity and what I'm doing I've written a composition that I'm going to play on this beautiful instrument from Switzerland and I'm using the first eight numbers and I'm going to be playing a melody that goes over these numbers 1 1 1 2 1 2 3 1 4 5 1 2 3 4 5 etc if I was to do about the first 40 numbers we'd be still here tomorrow so without further ado i'll bring the piece and we'll get steve barri my friend to help clap out the rhythm and I'm accompanying a wonderful video made in the last couple of weeks but my good friend me lavage so enjoy thanks very much I'm really glad that you're clapping because what I'd like to actually do now is give you a hands-on experience literally of what it's like to put rhythms together with numbers so I just wanted to teach you some very simple body percussion I've got a few friends that are going to help and I'd like you all to try this you can remain seated so the first one is in three beats it just goes like this one two three one two try that up the back as well two three beautiful okay see that looks great and we'll finish on the clap beautiful next one this is the second of three beats is in four and it goes like this one two three four so you use your laps three try it one two three four two three four and we'll finish here and last but not least a beautiful rhythm in five and it goes like this one two three four five one two three four five five that's fantastic we'll finish on the next clap okay now we're going to put that together and so what we're going to do is Steve over there is going to help the people on this side do the three so maybe we can make some sort of roughly a dividing line around here so you're all doing the three beat rhythm if there's a ride on the line you can try both rhythms I don't okay the people in the middle will follow marnai here and we'll bring it up to about here if that's okay so you all do fours yeah and then Alex over here will conduct the five so all of you up there and this way here so you can decide with your on the line which one you want to do okay so I'm going to count in like 1 2 3 4 and then we'll start together very good ok and then the first time we'd meet up is literally after 60 beats so to be on the 61st beat so good luck here we go ok here we go 1 2 3 4 great that's great so we're coming up to the end hip gun here we go and that's it that's great thanks thanks so much you
